 Customer Review

1. I need a simple, small and light camera to take  with me into the field, and the Canon Power shot A1400 definitely fits the bill. Finding a good optical viewfinder for a basic point-and-shoot camera like this was a relief as most manufacturers are phasing them out.

Even better, it's more than just a viewfinder - I can switch to 'live' mode and see exactly how the scene is being captured, rather than just  the digital readout screen. The PICTURE QUALITY is not necessarily the best.

When there isn't much   light, images tend to be a bit "noisy" and light artifacts appear. If I used this camera as a regular point and shoot I would be very upset. A normal smartphone can take sharper and better photos under these circumstances.

BATTERY LIFE is good. The two AA batteries seem to last longer than  previous Power Shots and that's a big improvement. For example, the Canon A1100 uses batteries  twice as fast as this A1400.

Newer versions of this camera (A2500) use a proprietary rechargeable battery, but it's much easier to pack two spare AA batteries than it is to buy and charge a spare A2500 proprietary rechargeable battery.

FLASH RECOVERY TIME is pretty fast, around 1.5 seconds, and didn't cause me any problems. I don't expect the recovery time to be as fast as a full DSLR and the time is really acceptable. It's a small handheld camera that fits easily in a shirt pocket with plenty of room, and it's incredibly light.

This camera has two disadvantages:- First of all, the 300-page user guide is only available online for download. No paper copy is available unless you print it yourself.

Hard copy available.- All  shooting modes and select able settings are not readily available or intuitive. For some reason Canon removed the individual selections on a button and buried them in the software where you have to scroll through the menus and make multiple  selections to find them.

This is not good. OVERALL: It really meets my needs for a very small and light camera and can also shoot decent videos.

 2. I've only done a few test shots and a few videos with it so far, but it seems obvious that this is a really wonderful little camera. It doesn't include  manual or cable, but you can buy the cable. cheap (I just remove the SD card and pop it into my computer's reader to get the contents out of the camera) and the manual is downloadable as a PDF if you really need it.

Everything is very intuitive and flexible. I appreciate being able to select lower quality photo settings, and my experimentation with the 8MP  setting (3264 x 2448) produced images with much less noise than the full 16MP.

The camera also comes with a couple of AA batteries, and contrary to what I've  written elsewhere, it can use rechargeable batteries. I think it's a real steal at the $100 MSRP  and it will be a steal if they ever go down. in the future.

I'm an SLR user but I like having that second camera in my bag for  unexpected shots. The writing speed for larger files slows it down a bit. now that 16 and 32GB seem to be coming down in price it might be a good time to buy a faster SDHC   card.

I can store  around 450 photos on the 2GB card I have now, but the write speed is a bit slow for the camera. I think it's a matter of personal preference, but it's worth considering. The video is pretty good too and I was able to get very high quality results after converting the standard .

MOV  file format to .WM V in Windows Movie Maker. The 720p output is pretty amazing for a $100 pocket camera. I remember the big, expensive VHS camcorders of the 1980s, there's not much to complain about  - Canon did it again!

Excellent camera!
